    versión en español

Each Newsletter the BJCP spotlights a different member of the organization. For this month we interviewed one of the first judges in Latin America, National Judge Carolina Pérez.

Please, give us a brief introduction about yourself, feel free to add anything you’d like to share.

(Carolina Pérez) I’m Carolina Pérez from Buenos Aires, Argentina. I started working professionally on the brewing industry as soon as I finished my studies of Chemical Engineering in 1996. My main focus is on quality control and sensory analysis. Since 2004, I work as a trainer for the craft brewing sector. Me and my husband own a malthouse, a brewery and a bar.

How and why did you join the BJCP?

(CP) I took my first BJCP exam in Buenos Aires in 2009. I remember Steve Piatz came to proctoring. There was a hunger for learning and a need for improving the beers produced at the time; the exam was a great tool to even out the knowledge, and to develop brewing and sensory skills at the same time. It was just perfect. We needed to improve the beers on the market. Today, our country has world class beers.

Besides judging, are you working with or contributing to the BJCP in other areas?

(CP) Besides judging in competitions, I’m exam administrator, proctor and grader.

Do you have any fond judging related memories to share?

(CP) Homebrewing competitions are like nothing else, I love them because one can find outstanding, highly rated beers, along with beers that you can learn a lot from. I judge in several national and international competitions. To me it’s a way to constantly compare the quality level of the beers and the market trends.

Where do you see the organization being in the future? Please consider any challenges you see in your region too (Latin America)

(CP) The BJCP is an organization that has gained recognition worldwide, and I believe it’s spirit should be kept beyond the long-serving, leading members. I think the organization spirit is wonderful; everyone has a chance to learn and develop sensory skills to improve the beers. In my region, the main problem is the long time it takes to grade the exams. I think we need to develop new tools that allows us to shorten the grading process.

    —————————
