Letters to the Editor
Jeff Sanders, Assistant Communication Director
The BJCP Board has addressed matters related to the 2014 style guidelines, exam scheduling, and sanctioning of criteria-limiting competitions
Letters to the Editor
At a Glance
  • The BJCP Bulletin is publishing correspondence between BJCP Officers or Staff that pertain to the whole of the membership.
  • Exam scheduling and attendance at exams continues to be a problem. The BJCP is working on changes.
  • The BJCP occasionally receives complaints on entry criteria for competitions. Sanctioning criteria, however, has not changed.
While a bulk of communication to the BJCP and The BJCP Bulletin happen on social media channels and in 1:1 emails directly to representatives that receive a direct response, The BJCP Bulletin identifies questions put to the BJCP Board or Staff that we feel are beneficial for republication to the broader membership.
The BJCP Bulletin also receives emails and other feedback on content published within The BJCP Bulletin. “Letters to the Editor” seeks to address both feedback from the BJCP Board and The BJCP Bulletin staff.
Implementation of the new 2014 Style Guidelines
For more information on implementation of the 2014 guidelines, please see the update from Gordon Strong, Style Guideline Committee Chair.
Exam Scheduling / Slots
Exam scheduling and attendance at exams and competitions continues to be a problem. This matter has been brought to the attention of the board in several emails and through multiple conversations. The BJCP Board is considering revisions to the BJCP By-laws to address this issue.
BJCP sanctioning of comps limited by some criteria
The BJCP Board has received feedback regarding the sanctioning of competitions that limit entry to the competition based upon a specific criteria. While the BJCP recognizes that this practice may seem exclusionary, it is the position of the Competition Organizer to decide the criteria for entry. The BJCP's rules for sanctioning remain unchanged.
What’s On Your Mind?
Have a question, feedback or something to say you feel is not just on your mind but others? Consider writing your Regional Representative. Your regional representative is your BEST source for answers related to the BJCP, and for representing your viewpoints to the BJCP Board and staff. Your representative will field your question or feedback in a timely manner, and bring it to the Board, or appropriate Directorate or Committee if necessary.
If you feel that your correspondence with your representative is something the entire BJCP would benefit from, send it to us.
If you have feedback on something that appeared in The BJCP Bulletin, write us at asst_communication_director@bjcp.org. Letters should be exclusive to The BJCP Bulletin. We do not publish open letters or third-party letters.
Letters should preferably be brief (150 to 175 words or so), should refer to an issue or an article that has appeared within The BJCP Bulletin, and must include the writer's email address and phone number.
We will acknowledge your letter or email in a timely manner. Writers of letters selected for publication will be notified before their publication. Letters may be edited and shortened for space.
