BJCP Activities at the National Homebrewers Conference 2014
The BJCP will hold several activities at the American Homebrewers Association 2014 National Homebrewers Conference in Grand Rapids, Michigan

AT A GLANCE
> The BJCP will hold one of each type of exam at the National Homebrewers Conference in June: Tasting, Mead, and Written
> The BJCP has planned a trial of the new Cider Written Exam to be held during the NHC 2014
> The BJCP will hold two members meetings, including a Judges Reception prior to the conference and its Annual Meeting after the conference
> New this year will be a BJCP Grader's Training, which will focus on an introduction to BJCP exam grading, and best practices

In addition to its annual members meeting, the BJCP holds a number of BJCP-related events during the course of the American Homebrewers Association's National Homebrewers Conference (NHC). The NHC will be held in Grand Rapids, Michigan, in 2014, and is expected to draw large crowds.

Following is a list of BJCP events and BJCP-related events scheduled to be held during the NHC 2014, current as of the publication of this article.

 

Tuesday, June 10, 2014

  • BJCP Written Proficiency Exam from 3:00 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. in the Amway Grand Vandenberg A room
  • BJCP Cider Tasting Exam (Trial). Time and location are TBD at the date of this publication.

Wednesday, June 11, 2914

  • BJCP Mead Exam from 8:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. in the Amway Grand Vandenberg B room. 8:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. will include the written portion of the exam, while 10:45 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. will include the tasting portion of the exam.
  • BJCP Tasting Exam from 10:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. in Amway Grand Vandenberg A room.
  • BJCP Grader Training from 12:00 p.m. to 1:00 p.m. in the Amway Grand Govenors Room. There will be a total of 120 seats available for a presentation with the following topics (more will likely be added) to provide classroom instruction and direction intended on targeting new or inexperienced graders on:
    • Properly scoring exams
    • Writing effective, informative and relevant RTPs
    • Outlining the roles of the lead and second graders
    • How to properly use the proctor and exam administrator sheets
    • What constitutes a complete score sheet
    • Recognizing master level exams
    • Common pitfalls and mistakes seen on RTPs
    • Technical info on how to fill in the EGF and transfer to the RTP
    • What is consensus, and how to reach consensus
    • Tips and advice from our more experienced graders
    • Establishing consistency in grading throughout the program
  • BJCP Judges Reception from 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. in the DeVos Place Grand Gallery rooms C, D, E and F. Tentatively there are two presentations scheduled, including one on cider. Those who register and attend will receive CEP credit.

Thursday, June 12, 2014

  • AHA National Homebrew Competition Final Round Judging from 8:30 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. in Devos Place. A judges breakfast is scheduled for 7:30 a.m. – 8:15 a.m., followed by Judge Session 1 from 8:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. After that there will be a judges lunch from 11:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. and then judging will conclude with Judge Session 2 from 1:45 p.m. to 5:00 p.m., and cleanup.
  • Seminars will also begin on Thursday and continue through Saturday June 14. Many seminars will be given by speakers who are board members, officers, graders, and members of the BJCP. One talk in particular will cover the BJCP's 2014 guidelines.

Saturday, June 14, 2014

  • BJCP Members Meeting from 4:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. at Devos Place. This is the BJCP members annual meeting. The agenda for this meeting has not been determined at the publication of this article.
